Zetia Impacts Cholesterol Absorption in Effort to Reduce Cholesterol

There are different ways and different drugs used to reduce cholesterol overall. Some impact the amount of cholesterol produced by the liver, while others work to keep the body from absorbing cholesterol that comes from food sources. Zetia is in the latter category. By inhibiting the absorption of cholesterol, less enters the bloodstream where it could eventually clog arteries and lead to heart disease.

Zetia is the brand name for a drug called ezetimibe. Ezetimibe can take several weeks or months before it is able to reduce cholesterol and make a difference in the numbers that show up from a blood test. Therefore, doctors and the manufacturers of Zetia don't recommend suddenly stopping when taking this medication and that you give it at lease a few months before deciding if it is working.

All prescription drugs carry with them the warning of possible side effects. In the case of Zetia, allergic reaction has occurred in some tests so it is listed as a possible, although unlikely side effect. The degree of reaction ranges from difficulty breathing to hives and could include swelling of the throat, lips or tongue. More common side effects from using Zetia to reduce cholesterol have included abdominal pain and diarrhea. Fatigue is also listed along with a disclaimer that other unknown side effects can occur. Zetia has also been known to adversely interact with other drugs, so it is important that doctors are aware of all that you are taking, including over the counter medications.

Managing cholesterol with prescription drugs usually makes a difference very quickly. However, there are natural methods that work just as quickly and without the risk of side effects. A low cholesterol and low fat diet is important even if you are taking prescription medications. With careful planning and good food and supplement choices, you can reduce cholesterol without the added step of a prescription drug.
