Prevalite Lowers Cholesterol but Raises Triglycerides

A popular drug used to lower cholesterol, Prevalite, is effective, but has many side effects including raising trigylceride levels. This is trading one type of blood fat for another and both can lead to serious heart disease.

Prevalite, generic name cholestyramine, is also sold under the brand names Questran and Locholest. Even manufacturers of the drug warn that those taking it to lower cholesterol should increase the amount of water they consume in order to prevent constipation. Also, cholestyramine can reduce the effectiveness of many other drugs. Therefore, it needs to be taken 1 hour before or 4-6 hours after taking other medications. In addition, anyone with an under active thyroid or who has diabetes, kidney disease or a blockage of their biliary or stomach tract should not take Prevalite or other cholestyramine products.

Certain vitamins are not assimilated into the body when taking Prevalite. This can cause a serious deficiency in vitamins, even if supplements are taken. In an effort to lower cholesterol, a diet rich in vitamins and minerals goes a long way toward achieving desirable levels of cholesterol. However, taking this medication can quickly sabotage your best dietary efforts.

The ideal way to lower cholesterol without drugs and their harmful side effects is through diet and exercise. Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) which is the bad cholesterol can be significantly lowered by eating a low-fat, low cholesterol diet. Even those who have high cholesterol as a result of heredity can raise the good cholesterol, High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) by routinely exercising. The combination can bring those total cholesterol levels down to below 200 mg/dL in a very short time.
