Vytorin Combines Two Drugs to Lower Cholesterol

© 2005 - Frank Mangano

Pharmaceutical manufacturers are looking at new ways to combine drugs to lower cholesterol. One such result is the drug Vytorin which combines ezetimbe (brand name Zetia) with the statin drug, simvastatin (brand name Zocor). The two work together to lower cholesterol by as much as 60%, but with the risk of some serious side effects particular to the use of statin drugs.

Vytorin lowers cholesterol in two ways. The Zetia alone is designed to keep the body from absorbing cholesterol from the foods you eat. It does not claim to help in weight loss, but simply keeps the body from getting more cholesterol from ingested food. The Zocor works to prevent the liver from producing too much cholesterol – a function it normally performs and one that is necessary to supply all of the cells in the body with necessary amounts of cholesterol. When the liver produces too much cholesterol, usually a result of heredity, then there can be dangerous levels of cholesterol in the blood stream that can clog the arteries and lead to heart disease.

The problem in using a drug like Vytorin to lower cholesterol is that it does not accomplish the goal without some potentially serious side effects. These side effects are worse for people with liver problems, or allergies. In studies, some participants experienced headaches, muscle soreness, and allergic reactions, such as shortness of breath. Some allergic reactions required immediate medical intervention.

You cannot always control how much cholesterol the liver produces, but you can control how it is stored and used in the body through the foods you eat. Many foods because of the vitamins and minerals they contain help the body properly process cholesterol and even eliminate excessive amounts. Keeping a healthy weight aids this process as well.
