You may be choosing between the lesser of two evils when taking Welchol (colesvelam) or other cholesterol reducing drugs that fall into a category of bile acid sequestrants. The reason reducing cholesterol works with a bile acid sequestrant is that they cause the cholesterol in the body to break down in order to make more bile acid. Usually bile acid sequestrants are prescribed with other cholesterol reducing drugs such as Lipitor, Zorcor, Baycol, or Mevacor. These are statin drugs and come with their own set of undesirable and even dangerous side effects, the greatest of which is a breakdown in muscle tissue.
