Fluvastatin Used to Reduce Cholesterol and Triglycerides
To reduce cholesterol and triglycerides doctors often prescribe the statin drug, Fluvastatin. It is sold under the brand name Lescol and is effective in lowering cholesterol from both food sources and that which the body produces itself.
Fluvastatin is taken in an oral dose daily and also comes in an extended release formula. Statin drugs are extremely effective at quickly reducing cholesterol, especially the low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol which is the bad cholesterol and negatively impacts total cholesterol. However, as with all statin drugs there is a long list of potentially dangerous side effects. These include muscle pain and weakness, stomach aches, nausea, diarrhea, yellowing of the skin, or dark urine. All of these, if severe, can be the sign of a serious condition and you should contact your doctor immediately.
The use of statin drugs to reduce cholesterol also carries with it the risk of life-long dependency. Once drug therapy begins, even when cholesterol levels are lower, the patient must stay on the drugs or run the risk of raising the cholesterol again. Statin drugs used to reduce cholesterol are known as enzyme blockers. They need to be taken at the same time each day to have the greatest effect.
