Lower Than Expected Use of Statin Drugs to Reduce Cholesterol
Statin drugs to reduce cholesterol are claimed by the drug industry to be the one of the most effective treatments of high cholesterol. Yet recent studies have shown that the amount being prescribed and used, though rising steadily over the last decade, is not increasing as quickly as anticipated.
In 1992, approximately 14% of those at a high risk for heart disease used statin drugs to reduce cholesterol. Only 9% of those with a moderate risk used the drugs. These numbers changed by 2002 to where 50% of high risk cholesterol patients used statin drugs to reduce cholesterol and 44% of moderate risk patients did. This percentage of increase is much lower than expected.
Some groups of people were found by the studies to be prescribed statin drugs at even lower rates than the general population, even though some of these may be at a higher risk for heart disease. The groups included younger patients, African-Americans, women, and those not under the care of a cardiologist. Untreated high cholesterol causes a build up of plaque in the arteries that can spawn several severe heart conditions including heart attack.
Statin drugs are designed to reduce the Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in the blood. This, along with a low fat and low cholesterol diet has proven effective over the last decade. However, the side effects and risks associated with statin drug usage may account for the slow acceptance and use among some health conscious individuals. Using statin drugs to reduce cholesterol can lead to many undesirable side effects. Among those are serious conditions of the kidneys that manifest themselves through muscle weakness and soreness.
Statin drug usage can often be avoided through a proper diet and lifestyle that includes a wide variety of whole grains, dark, leafy vegetables and exercise. A proven method that utilizes the principles of good nutrition and exercise can be found in The 60 Day Prescription Free Cholesterol Cure.
