Statins Reduce Cholesterol but not Colon Cancer Risk
It was hypothesized by scientists that not only could statin drugs reduce cholesterol, but also the risk for colon cancer. However, after two studies combined followed more than 87,000 patients on statin drugs, the conclusion was that there was no positive impact on the incidents of colon cancer after prolonged use.
Statin drugs such as Lipitor, Zocor, Pravochol, and others are effective in the effort to reduce cholesterol. Some are even showing positive signs of decreasing impotence and slowing the effects of Alzheimer's disease. It was also hoped that the active ingredients in these drugs could reduce the risk of colon cancer along with the other benefits.
Previous studies indicated that after 5 years on statin drugs, not only could patients reduce cholesterol, but they were able to lower the rate of cancer of the colon and rectum by 47 percent. When that research was expanded, the results strongly indicated there was no correlation. The false hopes from previous studies were the result of poor methodology.
In order to reduce cholesterol a diet that is low in fat and cholesterol is effective. This coupled with exercise and specific attention to getting certain nutrients can reduce cholesterol as much as statin drugs, but without the risk of side effects. In addition, the same type of diet used to manage cholesterol can reduce the risk of certain cancers. The American Cancer Society recommends diets rich in antioxidants.
