Bezafibrate for Lowering Cholesterol

© 2005 - Frank Mangano

Bezafibrate is an effective cholesterol lowering drug that is sold under several brand names. It is primarily used to lower triglycerides, which when high is referred to as hyperlipidemia, and raise the good kind of cholesterol – the High Density Lipoprotein (HDL). All of this works in lowering overall cholesterol. Bezafibrate is part of a larger class of drugs called fibrates. Some of the more common brand names that Bezafibrate is sold under for lowering cholesterol are Bezalip, Fribrate, Liparol, and Zimacol.

Bezafibrate works in lowering cholesterol by raising the HDL cholesterol. HDL works as a sort of cleanser for the arteries. When there is a buildup of the waxy LDL cholesterol (that is low density lipoprotein – the “bad” cholesterol) the arteries can become hardened or even blocked so that there isn’t enough blood flow or oxygen to the heart and other organs. If left alone, high cholesterol can lead to heart attack, stroke, and all kinds of coronary heart diseases.

There are several groups of people who should not take Bezafibrate or any fibrates because of the adverse side effects. Anyone with kidney or liver problems or those who have had gallstones or any type of gallbladder disease should not take Bezafibrate.

The side effects of Bezafibrate are also something to take into consideration. The list is long and has many extreme implications. For example, some people experience anemia or unexplained bleeding. Gallstones can also form and there could be problems with impotence. There can also be a serious damage to muscle tissue that leads to toxic kidney problems. Any muscle soreness that is extreme could be an indication that this is happening and you should contact your doctor immediately.

There are natural ways for lowering cholesterol without the use of drugs or their harmful side effects. Diet and exercise along with some minor lifestyle changes are equally effective as drugs, but without out dangerous side effects.
