Simple Ways To Add Cholesterol-Lowering Fiber To Your Diet

If you are striving for lowering cholesterol levels in your blood, fiber may be one of the most beneficial nutrients on the whole planet. Fiber, the soluble kind such as that found in oat bran, is the type of fiber that actually washes away the bad cholesterol that clings to the inner walls of the arteries. Here are a few simple ways to add fiber to your diet which can help in lowering cholesterol without the use of drugs.
Fresh fruits and vegetables are a great source of soluble fiber. Apples and carrots, which contain pectin, are two top choices. Adding just a couple of servings a day or better yet, following the recommended 5 servings of fruits and vegetables daily, will help in lowering cholesterol. However, be sure to eat them, in their freshest, most whole form. The benefits are lowered when the fruits and vegetables are turned to juice.
Psyllium is a form of soluble fiber that is found in oat bran. One bowl of oatmeal or cold oat cereal a day can make a difference over time in lowering cholesterol. So if you are eating a bowl of your kids latest chocolate sugar coated cereal, just make the switch to bran flakes with fruit and try some delicious organic soymilk. If you want to make sure you are getting plenty of Psyllium, you can also take a supplement. Pysllium comes in capsules or granules that can be dissolved in water or juice.
One more simple change that is easy to make is to switch from white bread to a whole grain, high fiber bread. Not only will it help in lowering cholesterol, but also this type of bread will help you feel full longer. Feeling full helps you maintain a healthy weight, which is another key ingredient in lowering cholesterol.
