What’s Good About “Bad” Cholesterol?
Lower cholesterol is the objective for so many that have been told their Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) or so called “bad” cholesterol is too high. But LDL, at least some amount, may not be all bad. There is an important role for LDL cholesterol, especially for those who do not drink enough water.
Water plays a vital part in good health, and lower cholesterol is achieved in part by drinking plenty of water. As the liver naturally produces LDL cholesterol to perform its function in cell formation, it can sometimes get a little carried away. This is found in people with a family history of high cholesterol – their diet alone is not always the culprit in having too much LDL cholesterol in their blood.
Some people are causing themselves to go into a condition known as chronic unintentional dehydration. This is when they do not consume enough water for long periods of time. They may be consuming plenty of beverages, but if they have caffeine they are only adding to the dehydration of their bodies. In situations such as this, LDL cholesterol protects the important hormone and vitamin D production in the body as well as the walls of the arteries.
A prolonged state of dehydration causes the blood to become acidic and make tiny tears in the arteries as it passes through. This can lead to embolisms anywhere in the body. LDL cholesterol coats the walls of the arteries in those who have become so dehydrated. This process may actually save them from embolism, but could lead to an excessive build up of LDL -- a precursor to serious heart disease.
The best way to manage cholesterol in a healthy way is to keep lower cholesterol levels, especially LDL cholesterol, by properly hydrating the body. This is done by drinking 6-8 glasses of water each day. Here, LDL levels do not need to compensate for dehydration.
