Drug Aims at Reversing Impact of Cholesterol

Cholesterol reduction is a primary health concern for millions of Americans. That is because the build up of this waxy substance in the blood vessels is a precursor to other serious conditions including narrowing of the arteries and heart disease.

Drugs to reduce cholesterol fall into different categories. There are statin drugs, which actually prohibit the production of too much cholesterol by the liver. This helps reduce further build up of cholesterol in the arteries, but does little to reduce damage that has already occurred. A second type drug strives to raise the High Density Lipoprotein (HDL), which is a desirable type of cholesterol that is effective in cleansing the arteries of the Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL), or bad cholesterol, as it passes through. Still they do little to remove any of the plaque build up that may have already resulted from unchecked high cholesterol.

A third type of drug is currently being researched and tested. Its objective is to keep cholesterol flowing freely through the blood vessels and away from artery walls. It is called Reverse Cholesterol Transport (RCT) because it works to remove existing cholesterol from the artery walls. Many drug manufacturers believe it will work best if used in conjunction with statin drugs. The RCT drugs are still several years away from coming to market, but already several manufacturers are working on their own formulation of the drug.

It is still not known what side effects, if any, will occur with use of RCT drugs. Currently statin drug usage runs the risk of side effects including nausea, vomiting, muscle weakness, and muscle soreness. To avoid the negative side effects of cholesterol reducing drugs, a low cholesterol diet that is low in fat should be the first defense in fighting cholesterol.
