Heart Attack Result of Failure to Lower Cholesterol
If you think that lower cholesterol won’t make a difference in the way you feel day in and day out you are probably right. The risk of not reducing cholesterol is usually not seen until many years after being told you need to lower cholesterol. One of the greatest risks is that of a heart attack.
A heart attack can occur if you fail to lower cholesterol. When there is too much cholesterol in the blood, it builds up as a plaque in the arteries. A heart attack can happen when this plaque is loosened and forms a clot which blocks blood flow. Already restricted arteries can turn into a full on heart attack whenever there is an increase in blood pressure. The added pressure on the artery walls may cause the plaque to tear the artery. As the body repairs the tear a clot forms which further reduces blood flow.
Reduced blood flow due to high cholesterol deprives the heart muscle of blood. When this happens, heart muscle cells die off and a myocardial infarction or MI – known to the average person as a heart attack – occurs.
There are no outward symptoms that your cholesterol levels are too high. A blood test is needed to determine that. There are however, many symptoms of a heart attack that can result from high cholesterol. These include shortness of breath along with chest pain, or a squeezing, heavy feeling in the chest. Sometimes the pain radiates from the chest to the shoulder and arms and even into the neck and jaw.
