Monitoring the Results of
Your Low Cholesterol Diet
© 2005, Frank Mangano
So, you’ve been told
by your doctor that you need to lower cholesterol. That
means eating a healthy, low cholesterol diet rich in
vitamins and minerals proven effective. But how can
you know if the low cholesterol diet you have been on
is really doing the job? The results of a blood test
are the way to find out if all your efforts paying off.
First of all, a good level for total cholesterol is
anything below 200 mg/dL – the lower the better. This
means that there is less than 200 milligrams of cholesterol
per deciliter of blood. A simple, fasting blood test
not only measures the LDL cholesterol – the type of
cholesterol you should lower if it is above 100-120
mg/dL, but it will also tell you the levels of your
HDL cholesterol – the good kind. HDL levels should be
above 40 mg/dL. To fast, you should not eat or drink
anything for 12 hours before blood is drawn.
The ratio of LDL to HDL cholesterol is just as important
as the level of each since HDL helps regulate LDL cholesterol.
A low cholesterol diet can help you achieve that balance,
and is a necessary part of lowering cholesterol whether
or not you take prescription drugs.
Blood testing should be completed every year, depending
on how high your cholesterol is. If you are in the stage
of critically high, you will want to work to lower cholesterol
immediately and may want to monitor it with a blood
test every 6 months for the first couple of years. There
are no symptoms, good or bad, to tell you if you have
been successful in lowering cholesterol through dietary
changes. You will have to get a blood test for definitive
results. To learn more about a low cholesterol diet,
